The Link Between Clean Ducts and Indoor Air Quality

Dirty air ducts have a big impact on HVAC equipment. By forcing the furnace and air conditioning unit to work harder, dirty ductwork increases their energy consumption and decreases their life spans. If you don’t schedule duct cleaning every three to seven years, you’ll wind up wasting money in a couple of different ways.

Dirty ducts would still merit cleaning if they could only harm HVAC equipment. But that’s not even the half of it. When you clean your ducts regularly, you are also promoting better indoor air quality at your home or place of business. That’s a direct investment in your health – without which, you have nothing.

How Does Duct Cleaning Improve Indoor Air Quality?

Whenever your HVAC system blows air into your home, it blows it through the ductwork. Even a smaller home can have over 100 linear feet of it. Every square inch of ductwork can collect a wide range of contaminants: some harmless, some irritating, and some downright toxic. As a result, every time your heating or cooling kicks in, a continuous gust of air can blow around microscopic particles that you don’t want inside your lungs.

Duct cleaning isn’t just a light dusting. It combines powerful vacuum force and special brushes that thoroughly cleanse every interior surface of the ductwork. In doing so, it eliminates many of the contaminants which adversely affect indoor air quality – and by extension, your health.

Which Contaminants Does Duct Cleaning Remove?

If it can collect inside ductwork, it can pose a threat to your health. Here are just a few types of contaminants you can live without once your ducts have been cleaned:

  • Dirt – When it breaks down into tiny pieces and becomes airborne, dirt turns into particulate matter. Outdoor particle pollution is a far greater threat to your health than the particulate matter inside your home. Even so, no scientific evidence suggests there is a “safe” threshold for inhaling fine particles whether they are made of dirt or otherwise.

  • Pollen – Tree pollen, grass pollen and ragweed pollen are three of the leading causes of hay fever, and are also known to cause symptoms of asthma. Even the best HVAC filter isn’t 100% effective at removing these irritants before they can settle inside ductwork.

  • Pet dander Around 10 to 20% of the world’s population is allergic to dogs and/or cats. You may be one of them, but that doesn’t mean you can live without your furry friend. In addition to regularly brushing your dog or cat, you can help minimize your exposure to their dander by having your ducts regularly cleaned.

  • MoldMold allergies are also common, and can include discomforting symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose and watery eyes. Exposure to mold spores may also exacerbate symptoms of asthma, as well as cause serious medical issues in people who have weakened immune systems.

  • Rodent droppings – Mice love living inside ductwork where it is dark, secure, and heated all winter. Mice also relieve themselves indiscriminately, which is why so many ducts become rodent bathrooms. That’s just as gross as it is unhealthy: mouse droppings can contain potentially fatal diseases such as hantavirus and salmonellosis!
